This film was made on the year I was born; ironically, Roald Dahl (one of my favourite writers) happened to die on that year too. The Witches was a brilliant film, and one of the best Roald Dahl films out there. In fact, most of his films were actually pretty good anyway. Personally, The Witches was my third favourite Roald Dahl film (the other two being Matilda and James and the Giant Peach) but "The Witches" is probably the most "darkest" of all the Roald Dahl films. The film was very scary to watch as a child. It's unsuitable if you're too young. It will scare the kids for sure. The part at the beginning where the boy is playing outside, and one of the witches comes was frightening. That witch was very scary. I hated her. It's a scary film to watch on Halloween. The characters were really good. I really liked Luke. He's a brave young boy. He takes on those witches. The "Grand High Witch" was also scary. I couldn't believe how hideous and ugly she really was. These witches are evil. I wanted them all destroyed, and that's what happened towards the end. Thankfully! You, the viewer, are always supporting Luke in his trip at the hotel. Let's not forget Luke's grandmother named Helga where they move to England. The icing on the cake would have to be that Rowan Atkinson was part of this film. He added that "flavour" if you know what I mean. You first have to see it in order to understand what I meant by that. I liked him in the movie. He made the movie exciting. He was funny. Let's not forget Luke's new friend named Bruno. All he does is likes to eat. The only regret was that a sequel wasn't made given how the ending planned out though it wasn't necessary. It would've been nice if there was a sequel - The Witches 2. I leave that to the imagination. I can't believe that there are more witches out there. The film isn't for those under ten years old I'm afraid. There's also a book titled The Witches.

As most movies The Witches fails to be better than the book on which it is based.
In second grade my teacher read my class Roald Dahl's "James and the Giant Peach" we all were charmed by it and like most of my class, I too went out to the nearest book stores and libraries to read the other books of Roald Dahl. The Witches is one of my favorites of his works, although I haven't read it for quite a while. As for the movie. The casting is so-so. Anjelica Huston, though is superb as the Grand High Witch. Not really as how I imagined the Grand High Witch when I first read the book, but nevertheless she pulls it off very well. The effects were brilliant. the mice were realistic, as were the transformations and the 'real' face of The Grand High Witch. The biggest disappointmant though was the ending. I felt that the books ending was much more fitting. The ending here was simply the "happily ever after" type ending, but then again keep in mind it's a children's movie. But like Roald Dahl said "there's no such thing as a good witch. The Witches is an enjoyable movie, though and parents won't mind watching it with their children, because let's face it: books like The BFG, The Witches and James and the Giant Peach may all say ages 8-12 on the back but they can be enjoyed by anyone of any age.
